The accounts of the regal period have come down overlaid with such a mass of myth and legend that few can be verified; Roman historians of later times, lacking authentic records, relied on fabrications of a patriotic nature. Following this period, when a republic was established, Rome became a world power and emerged as an empire with extensive boundaries.

Arch of Constantine

The Arch of Constantine, dating from 316 A.D., was erected to celebrate the Emperor's "decennalia" and his victory over Maxentius at the Ponte Milvio (312 A.D.).

Colosseum

The Flavian Amphitheatre (the Colosseum's real name) was begun in the year 72 A.D. under Vespasian and inaugurated by the Emperor Titus in the year 80. The inauguration was a solemn event marked by 100 days of festivities. The writer Dion Cassius relates that during these festivities 9000 wild beasts were killed and 2000 gladiators lost their lives.
